Il-kotba notevoli tagħha jinkludu Jazz People (1970) u As Serious As Your Life (1977), it-tnejn ippubblikati għall-ewwel darba minn Allison u Busby.[2] L-awtobijografija ta’ Wilmer, Mama Said There'd Be Days Like This: My Life in the Jazz World, ġiet ippubblikata fl-1989.

Ħajja bikrija

[immodifika | immodifika s-sors]

Val Wilmer twieled f'Harrogate, Yorkshire, l-Ingilterra, fis-7 ta' Diċembru 1941. Hija oħt il-poeta u kittieb Clive Wilmer. Hekk kif spiċċat it-Tieni Gwerra Dinjija, il-familja tagħha reġgħet lura Londra minn fejn kienet evakwat.[3]

Il-jazz daħal f'ħajjietha meta bdiet tisma’ diski ta’ siiltiet klassiċi tal-jazz ta’ qabel il-gwerra. Eventwalment kompliet tiskopri diversi diski importanti permezz ta’ Shining Trumpets ta’ Rudi Blesh, ktieb dwar l-istorja tal-jazz, u Jazz ta’ Rex Harris.[4] Wilmer inġibdet sew lejn d-diski ta’ Bessie Smith (speċjalment “Empty Bed Blues”) u l-kant ta’ Fats Waller – hija kienet tmur fis-Swing Shop fi Streatham, fin-nofsinhar ta’ Londra, fl-età ta’ 12-il sena, fejn kienet titħalla tqalleb id-diski tal-jazz sakemm issib xi ħaġa li riedet.[5]

Tliet snin wara dawn l-esplorazzjonijiet, Wilmer bediet tikteb dwar il-mużika tas-suwed, imħeġġa u ispirat minn Max Jones, Paul Oliver u oħrajn. [6] Hija kienet tattendiet l-kunċerti akkumpanjata minn ommha, għax kienet tqisha żgħira wisq biex tħalliha tmur waħedha. Wilmer tgħid li din kienet “bis-saħħa tat- tolleranza taʼ ommha"[5] li tħalliet tesplora l-interessi tagħha b'mod tant ħieles, speċjalment fi żmien meta t-tfajliet żgħar kienu spiss miżmuma lura b'diversi limitazzjonijiet soċjali mill-għażliet futuri tagħhom: "It-tfajliet, kienu jgħidulna spiss, iridu jikbru biex ikunu żeffiena tal-ballet . .. Ma naħsibx li qatt għadda minn moħħi li nikkunsidra l-għażliet femminili tas-soltu, b’mod riżolut oppost kif kont għal kull ħaġa li kienet assoċjata m’attivitajiet femminili u ma kinux jinvolvi li mmur f’postijiet, nkun u nagħmel [li rrid].”[7]

Karriera bħala kittieba

[immodifika | immodifika s-sors]

Familjarii ma' l-ewwel diski tal-jazz u l-blues, Wilmer bdiet tikteb dwar il-jazz u mużika Afrikana-Amerikana oħra, b'enfasi fuq il-messaġġi politiċi u soċjali tal-mużika.[8] L-ewwel artiklu tagħha (bijografija ta' Jesse Fuller ) deher f’Jazz Journal f’Mejju 1959 meta kienet għadha biss 17-il sena. Meta rriflettiet dwar kif oriġina dan l-artiklu, Wilmer stqarret li: "Kont kittieb ta' ittri iffissata, hekk iltqajt ma' Jesse Fuller, kont ktibtlu bla ma kien jafni. Miskin għalih dak il-mużiċist Amerikan li kien iblah biżżejjed biex jagħmel joħriġ l-indirizz tiegħu ippublikat x'imkien — kont insibu u nfajjarlu ittra. L-aqwa ħaġa kienet tassew, ngħid tassew, tal-blegħ kienet li tant kienu jwieġbu! Dawn il-mużiċisti kbar u karattri minn kultura sewda fuq in-naħa l-oħra tad-dinja kitbu lura lil din it-tfajla bajda suburbana żagħżugħa fl-Ingilterra."[9]

L-espressjoni perspicaċja tagħha tad-disparità bejn kittieba tal-mużika rġiel u nisa hija fundamentali fix-xogħol ta' Wilmer. Meta daħlet f’dan il-qasam fl-1959, fehmet li l-kitba dwar il-mużika kienet “xi ħaġa li jagħmlu l-irġiel. Kien hemm penali x'tħallas talli tkun mara fid-dinja tar-raġel...[u] għal mara bajda li tkun preokkupata b'xi ħaġa li kienu jagħmlu n-nies suwed kien ifisser li kellha tesperjenza pressjoni addizzjonali."[10] Permezz tal-mużika Afrikana-Amerikana Wilmer setgħet tgħaddas ruħha f'realtajiet li kienu jibqgħu mhux skoperti kieku baqgħet għażlet li taħdem b'mod komdu. Għaliha, dawn l-esperjenzi kienu fundamentali u li jistgħu jbiddilu ħajjet n-nies.[10] Il-perseveranza tagħha f’dan l-qasam diffiċli u d-devozzjoni tagħha lejn il-mużika wassluha biex tiskopri lilha nnfisha u tiker fuq livell personali, u l-għarfien li “l-potenzjal għal bidla personali li jeżisti fina lkoll."[10] Permezz tal-kitba tagħha dwar il-mużika, Wilmer setgħet tipprovdi vuċi għal djalogu transatlantiku, multikulturali u multirazzjali, billi tidħol f'"parti mill-istorja, jew [f'dak li] jista' jiġri daqt."[11]

Mill-1959, hija intervistat mijiet ta’ mużiċisti, kitbet previzzjonijiet u riċensjonjiet. Ix-xogħol tagħha ġie kkwotat u użat fir-riċerka għal ħafna kotba, artikli u films, inklużi diversi bijografiji ta’ mużiċisti ewlenin. L-intervisti bikrija tagħha ma' Earle Warren,[12] Lee Young, [13] u Paul "Polo" Barnes[14] huma ċċitati fil-bijografija ta' Douglas Henry Daniels ta' Lester Young.[15] Intervisti ma ' Thelonious Monk, Nellie Monk u Billy Higgins huma kkwotati fil-bijografija ta ' Robin D.G. Kelley ta' Thelonious Monk.[16] Eżempji oħra tal-użu tal-intervisti bikrija ta' Wilmer jinkludu "Texas Trombone: Henry Coker " [17] fil-kotba ta' Dave Oliphant Texan Jazz u Jazz Mavericks of the Lone Star State.[18]

Aktar tard kisbet rikonoxximent għall-intervisti tagħha mas-sassofonisti Joe Harriott u Ornette Coleman,[19] u saret ukoll fotografu. Fl-1965, fil-kitba tagħha dwar il-bidliet fl-istil ta’ Monk, qalet: “Għal dawn l-aħħar qisu 10 snin, il-mużika ta’ Monk saret aktar faċli biex tismagħha, għalkemm mhux neċessarjament aktar sempliċi. Dak li qed jagħmel huwa impenjattiv u profond daqs qatt qabel, għalkemm jidher li kien inqas provokattiv minn meta kien qed iħarbat ir-regoli."[20]

L-saġġi u l-obitwarji tagħha huma notevoli għall-abbiltà tagħhom li jiżvelaw b’mod sottili l-inugwaljanzi sottostanti li kienu jiffaċċjaw l-artisti suwed u n-nisa fl-industrija tal-mużika, ħafna drabi fi kliemhom stess. F'obituary tal-15 ta' Lulju 1960 f'Jazz News, Wilmer jikkwota lil Memphis Slim hekk: "Jien ukoll ridt niftaħ il-kumpanija tal-pubblikazzjoni tiegħi stess, iżda min imexxi d-diski ma jridx jimpjega raġel li għandu l-kumpanija tal-pubblikazzjoni tiegħu stess," u jiżvela d-diffikultà li kien jiffaċċja bħala artist iswed. Waqt li rrakkontat il-ħbiberija tagħha mal-liriċista influwenti, kritika tal-mużika, intervistatur u kantanta Kitty Grime, Wilmer uriet l-imħabba, ir-rispett u l-ammirazzjoni tagħha, filwaqt li tiżvela wkoll il-preġudizzju maskili fid-dinja tal-mużika: "Kien matul dan il-perjodu straordnarju li ltqajna, fi żmien meta x-xena tal-jazz kienet dinja prattikament kollha maskili... l-għarfien u l-għarfien tagħha kienu xi ħaġa li l-biċċa l-kbira tal-kummentaturi iżgħar kienu diffiċli biex jimitaw”.[21]

Fil-kitba tagħha, hija kontinwament iżżomm l-istorja tal-jazz fuq quddiem, u tippreżenta lilha nnifisha bħala semmiegħa devota, ammiratur u xi ħadd li jħobb il-mużika. Madankollu, hija ammettiet li kienet intervistat lill-aħwa Albert Ayler u Donald Ayler bħala biċċa xogħol ġurnalistika u mhux bħala ammiratriċi, iżda eventwalment waslet biex "tammira lil Albert Ayler bħala l-aħħar viżjonarju ewlieni tal-jazz".[22]

Għalkemm il-jazz u l-blues huma l-qofol tax-xogħol ta' Wilmer, hija għandha għarfien wiegħsa tal-mużika u wriet dan f’diversi ġeneri meta, pereżempju, meta kitbet dwar kif iż-żjara ta’ Jimi Hendrix fl-Ingilterra fl-1966 l, skont hi, tat “lix-xena lokali xi ftit fjakka injezzjoni mill-aktar meħtieġa".[23]

Wilmer ikkontribwiet għal firxa vasta ta' pubblikazzjonijiet, [24] inklużi Melody Maker, Down Beat (kienet il-korrispondent tagħhom fir-Renju Unit, 1966–1970), Jazz Journal, Musics, Double Bassist, Mojo, The Wire,[25] u kkontribwiet regolarment. obitwarj ta' mużiċisti f'The Guardian.[26]

Jazz People (1970)

[immodifika | immodifika s-sors]

L-ewwel ktieb ta’ Wilmer, Jazz People, kien wieħed mill-ewwel kotba ppubblikati minn Margaret Busby għand Allison & Busby fl-1970 [27] u issa spiss jissejjaħ wieħed mit-“tlieta jew erba’ mill-isbaħ kotba li qatt inkitbu dwar il-jazz” (sussegwentement maħruġ fl-Istati Uniti minn Da Capo Press).[28] Hija tinkludi intervisti ma' mużiċisti Amerikani li jinkludu Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Art Farmer, Babs Gonzales, Jimmy Heath, Billy Higgins, Thelonious Monk, Archie Shepp, Cecil Taylor, Clark Terry, Big Joe Turner u Randy Weston. Skont Kirkus Reviews: "L-enfasi hija fuq in-nies f'dawn l-erbatax-il intervista, il-personalitajiet wara l-jazz, il-burdati, l-ambizzjonijiet, l-influwenzi tagħhom....L-awtur tosserva tajjeb u l-profili huma qosra u b'saħħithom b'noti fil-għoli għal dawk li jifhmu."[29]

The Face of Black Music (1976)

[immodifika | immodifika s-sors]

Ikklassifikata bħala "fotografu importanti daqs kemm hi kittieba"[30], Wilmer hija l-awtur ta ' The Face of Black Music (Da Capo Press, 1976), li bħal Jazz People huwa meqjus bħala test kanoniku u influwenti fil-kritika tal-mużika.[31]

As Serious As Your Life (1977)

[immodifika | immodifika s-sors]

Il-ktieb ta’ Wilmer As Serious as Your Life, ippubblikat għall-ewwel darba fl-1977 minn Allison u Busby, issa huwa klassiku tal-kitba dwar il-jazz,[32][33] li fit-titlu tiegħu jirreferi għal xi ħaġa li qalilha McCoy Tyner : "Music's not a plaything; it's as serious as your life."[34] L-ewwel rakkont tal-"jazz ħieles" (free jazz) rivoluzzjonarju u l-prattikanti tiegħu, [35] jiddokumenta wkoll l-esperjenzi tan-nisa fir-rigward tal-"jazz il-ġdid" (new jazz) fil-komunitajiet Afrikani-Amerikani, u jiddevja mir-"regola masklinista tal-esklużjoni".[33] Waqt li ppreżentat l-politika sesswali fid-dinja tal-jazz, Wilmer kixfet il-politika sesswali fil-kritika tal-mużika stess.[33] Fix-xogħol tagħha, hija tippreżenta "vjaġġ deskrittiv mill-aqwa li jqanqlu lill-qarrej permezz ta' għadd ta' komunitajiet li jidhru inkommensurabbli f'daqqa.... Din hija l-viżjoni u l-possibbiltà tal-komunità meta l-ġlieda lejn il-libertà tagħraf l-intersezzjonijiet tad-differenza sesswali, is-sess, u is-sesswalità kif ukoll ir-razza u l-klassi, bħala l-bażi għal prattiċi ta’ improvizzazzjoni”.[33] As Serious As Your Life ġie stampat mill-ġdid minn Serpent's Tail f'Marzu 2018 (rakkomandat fuq il-qoxra minn Nat Hentoff bħala "An exceptionally illuminating book on jazz"), u Michael J. Agovino kiteb f'The Village Voice: "Fil-'kontrokultura' tas-snin 60 u s-snin 70 , li ħafna minnha saret cash register enormi, Val Wilmer waddbet id-dwal stroboscopiċi tagħha fuq pajsaġġ mużikali u politiku li fil-fatt imur kontra l-kultura. Tal-mistħija li tant ftit - suwed u bojod - kienu qed jagħtu każ f'dak iż-żmien. Iżda l-ktieb tagħha, u x-xogħol li jiddokumenta, jibqa' serju, u meħtieġ, bħal dejjem."[36]

L-isem tal-kumpanija tal-produzzjoni tal-mużika Serious, stabbilita f’nofs is-snin tmenin u organizzaturi tal London Jazz Festival annwali, huwa parzjalment ispirat mill-ktieb ta’ Wilmer, skont il-fundatur John Cumming: “Nirrakkomanda dak il-ktieb lil kull min hu interessat fl-evoluzzjoni tal-jazz. fl-aħħar tas-seklu 20. ...dak kien ktieb li tassew ġagħlini naħseb. Kienet taħlita tal-ktieb ta' Val, u wkoll li fis-snin tmenin il-kelma 'serious' kienet sar biċċa slang kontemporanja. In-nies kienu jgħid, 'Din hija biċċa xogħol tassew serja.' [37]

Mama Said There'd Be Days Like This (1989)

[immodifika | immodifika s-sors]

L-awtobijografija ta’ Wilmer, Mama Said There'd Be Days Like This: My Life in the Jazz World (Women's Press, 1989), tagħti dettalji dwar l-iżvilupp tagħha bħala artista/ġurnalista, u tinkludi l-ħruġ tagħha bħala lesbjana f’ambjent mużikali fil-biċċa l-kbira eterosesswali.[35] Fil-Feminist Review, Robyn Archer kitbet: "B'dan il-ktieb Val ħadet id-deċiżjoni kuraġġuża li tgħid l-affarijiet kif verament kienu. Ir-riżultat huwa storja soċjali ta' mużika li bħala m'hemmx, u rakkont bla tidwir mal-lewża tal-iżvilupp mit-twelid sal-maturità ta’ mara dinamika li l-arti dokumentarja tagħha jistħoqqilha li tiġi evalwata mill-ġdid kollha kemm hi fid-dawl ta’ dan il-ktieb.”[38]
