Diskussjoni:Ġebla ta' Majmuna
Dehra
On one side there was a beautiful Arabic design with an inscription divided into four parts (1) The Epitaph (2)??? and (3) words that the dead girl would say to any reader (4) reflections on future life. Here is a short translation,
- In the name of God and Muhammad, God is forever, but he wants his creatures to end.
- This is the tomb of Majmuna, daughter of Hasan from Gabes of Susa. She died on the sixteenth of Great Xahban, in the year 569, which shows that there is only one God.
- Ask yourself if any person can keep away death.
- Death has drawn me out from my short life, even though I was good; I was diligent, and what I did will be reckoned.
- You who read this, see that dust covers my eyelids, in my place and in my house, nothing but sadness and weeping; what will my resurrection be like?"
The girl had died on Thursday, 21st March 1174.
- This tablet was sculptured in beautiful Arabic (Cufic) characters on an old Roman marble slab. The date on it shows clearly that, though many Arabs had left Malta after the coming of Count Roger, a large number remained here up to the 12th Century
