| Deskrizzjoni | We are now at Baku's famous Maiden Tower at the outer fringes of Baku's Icheri Sheher or old town quarter. The unusual part round, part square construction of the Maiden Tower does give an impression that someone lost his marbles somewhere! You can go up to the top but I did not climb up, as I am not a big fan of steep steps. Not to mention that I am not quite physically up to it these days. This Maiden Tower was part fortress, part light house (the Caspian Sea used to be lapping at its base but now it's about a km away). This tapering 29m stone tower is Baku’s foremost historical icon with rooftop views surveying Baku Bay and the Old City. Possibly millennia old, its original date of construction is the subject of much debate, though much of the present structure appears to date to the 12th century. The Azeri name, Qız Qalası, is usually rendered ‘Maiden’s Tower’ in English, leading to plenty of patently fictitious fairy tales. Various versions are considered in the imaginative little multimedia installations that adorn several floors of the tower's interior, which I would probably have seen had I ventured to the top, which I did not unfortunately.
